Be clear about the material

This is PU vegan leather, not full-grain hide. We would rather you know that now than after it arrives. In practice it engraves more cleanly and evenly than hide does, holds its color, needs no conditioning, and does not vary piece to piece. What it will not do is develop the patina a full-grain wallet develops over ten years. For a wallet that lives in a back pocket and gets replaced in five, it is arguably the more sensible material — but if he is the kind of man who talks about tanneries, buy him the engraved cufflinks instead.

Where to put the engraving

Inside, on the card slots or the inner panel. An initial on the outside of a wallet is a monogram anyone can see; the same initial inside is a private thing between the two of you, and it is the version people keep. For an anniversary, put the date there rather than on the face.
