A wedding party, where matching printed ties in the wedding's own pattern do something no shop-bought tie can. And a first Father's Day, where a subtle repeated motif — a child's drawing, a date — works because only the wearer knows what it is.
Where it fails
On a man who does not wear ties. Tie-wearing has collapsed in most industries, and a printed tie is not something he can quietly repurpose. Check that he owns and uses ties before ordering — if he does not, the engraved cufflinks have the same formal register with more chance of being used, and even those need French cuffs.
